AFL Goal Posts
PILA’s AFL goal posts have been installed at the historic Birchgrove Oval, nestled in the heart of Sydney. This venue, once the sacred ground of rugby league, is now set to embrace a new chapter in its sporting legacy.
HISTORIC GROUND WITH A RICH LEGACY
Birchgrove Oval holds a special place in Australian sports history. It was here that the first premiership game of rugby league took place in 1908, showcasing a thrilling match between Souths and Norths, alongside Balmain and Wests, with an enthusiastic crowd of 3,000 fans. However, Birchgrove Oval is not solely a rugby league venue; it was also home to AFL matches from 1903 to 1926. Following a long hiatus, AFL goal posts have finally returned, revitalising the oval and making it a multi-purpose sporting ground once again.
THE RETURN OF AFL GOAL POSTS
The recent addition of AFL goal posts at Birchgrove Oval by AFL NSW/ACT marks a significant milestone for the facility. This move not only acknowledges the oval’s historical connection to AFL but also paves the way for its use by a diverse range of sports. The new goal posts enable local teams to compete in AFL matches, encouraging greater participation in the sport across Sydney’s inner-west.
AFL AUSKICK FOOTBALL FESTIVAL LAUNCH
To celebrate the installation of the AFL goal posts, players from the Sydney Swans and the GWS Giants kicked off the NSW statewide AFL Auskick football festival at Birchgrove Oval. This initiative aims to promote AFL among local schools, introducing young athletes to the exciting world of Australian Rules Football. The participation of these prominent AFL teams not only boosts visibility for the sport but also inspires the next generation of players to engage in physical activity and teamwork.
MULTI-USE SPORTS VENUE
Birchgrove Oval is evolving into a true multi-use sporting facility, catering to a variety of sports including rugby league, soccer, and now AFL. The Balmain senior AFL club and local juniors will share this iconic ground, ensuring that a wider community can benefit from its facilities. The integration of AFL goal posts alongside existing rugby league and soccer infrastructure exemplifies a progressive approach to sports management.
COUNCIL’S VISON FOR SPORTING DIVERSITY
The Mayor of the Inner West Council expressed enthusiasm for the venue’s transformation, emphasising the need for inclusivity in local sports. “With the ever-increasing demand for sporting fields, the days of valuable grounds like Birchgrove being used for only one code are over. Rugby league, soccer, AFL, and cricket can coexist at Birchgrove Oval, allowing the maximum number of local people to play,” the Mayor stated. This vision aligns with broader efforts to ensure that community sporting facilities are utilised to their fullest potential.
SUPPORTING GRASSROOTS SPORTS
The CEO of the NRL echoed this sentiment, noting the expected rise in junior rugby league participation as grassroots funding continues to flow into junior clubs. “I like to see young people playing any sport — but naturally, I want them playing rugby league. I would hope it won’t be long before we see more rugby league posts going up around Sydney,” he remarked. This commitment to fostering a sporting culture is vital for nurturing talent across various codes.
A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR BIRCHGROVE OVAL
The installation of AFL goal posts at Birchgrove Oval is more than just a physical addition; it represents a cultural shift in how sporting facilities are used in Sydney. By embracing multiple sports, Birchgrove Oval is set to become a vibrant hub for community engagement and athletic development. As players, fans, and families gather at this historic venue, the rich legacy of Birchgrove Oval will continue to grow, providing opportunities for athletes of all ages to thrive in their chosen sport.
With the revival of AFL alongside traditional rugby league and soccer, Birchgrove Oval is a shining example of how sporting venues can adapt and flourish in a modern, multi-code environment. Whether you’re an avid AFL fan or a passionate supporter of rugby league, there’s a place for everyone at this iconic ground.
